Wellington Library Design Competition

Proving that uncomplicated and heart-felt can be wonderfully engaging…

As part of our Fortnightly Friday endeavours we worked with year 7 and 8 students from Mt Cook School to submit an entry into the Wellington Library Design Competition, part of the Festival of Architecture put on by the Wellington Chapter of NZIA.

Our students told their stories from the library that was, and responded with creative ideas for how a library of the future could build on the functions they know a good library serves… and, alongside architects and architectural students, their entry was awarded Highly Commended!

We are SO happy for our junior designers and loved the process of facilitating the creative process and curating the submission.

Located on Tory St, all Mt Cook students enjoy frequent trips into the city to experience shows, events and, until recently, fortnightly walks to the Central Library. Tamariki started the process by telling stories from their experiences at the library, some of which are shown in the submission. These were grouped into themes that then were used as launch pads for ideas for what a Library of the Future could hold. The students worked in small groups to create drawings to communicate their concepts.
