wellington hospital patient lounge

A Nature-Inspired Haven for Patients and Families

Transforming a tired, empty space into a bright, warm and practical lounge for patients, families, and staff, inspired by nature to foster comfort, privacy, and connection.

The Wellington Hospital patient lounge, located in the Blood & Cancer Centre, was in desperate need of a makeover to honour the strength of its patients and the dedication of its staff. With the goal of creating a space that felt less clinical and more comforting, we drew inspiration from nature to design an environment that supports both interaction and moments of privacy for its diverse users.

Key features of the revamp include a condensed kitchen with a computer table for staying connected, and bespoke screens to create distinct seating zones for added privacy. A soothing colour palette, selected to harmonise with the broader hospital design, brightens the space while exuding warmth and calm.

We also addressed practical challenges with innovative solutions, such as a slat wall system for organising brochures and notices. Durable, easy-to-clean furniture accommodates a range of needs, while the layout introduces clear structure to the large space.
